That the Songs

That the songs of the sons and the daughters
of the people of this planet
should be sung at all
is a perfect wonder.

That we might all join our voices together
into one mighty chorus, each one
singing his own song
but singing together
is more than I believe
could ever happen.

But I will teach my children how to sing,
how to live their dreams
of pure delight in being,
and how to pound a nail
and mend a seam.
